During
pregnancy, the mother’s body undergoes a series
of structural &functional changes. These natural
adaptations will result in the healthy development
of the foetus& safe delivery. After delivery she
needs good care to regain normalcy and to prevent
post natal complications. Ayurveda plays a big role
in guiding the mothers, about the daily routine &
the diet during the post natal period. 45 days after
the delivery is termed as the post natal period. |
|
Post
natal care in Ayurveda aims at: |
|
1.
Stopping the excessive bleeding.
2. Prevention of infections.
3. Relieving the body pain & weakness.
4. Regaining the original size & shape of the
uterus.
5. Enhancing the production of breast milk.
6. Correcting digestion.
7. Overall toning of the muscles. |
|
There
are many do’s & don’ts in
this period. |
|
Massaging
with lukewarm oil & giving bath with hot water
is one of the important practices. There are many
oils available for this purpose. Dhanwantharam thailam
and Nalpamaradi thailam are considered to be the best
amongst all. |
|
The
baby also has to be looked after with care, during
this period, so as to help it grow with complete health.
There are trained people available to look after the
mother & the baby, during the postnatal period;
who will go home in the morning, do the necessary
procedures to both the mother& the baby every
day. |
|
Strict
diet should be followed. The newly delivered mother
should eat lots of green & drink lot of milk.
She should avoid taking lot of spicy& oily food.
Should take rest by sleeping on time. She should not
get exposed to the infections by roaming around. |
|
Ayurveda
medicines like Dashamoolarishtam, Jeerakarishtam,
and Shatavarigulam should be used to correct the digestion
and to enhance the breast milk production under the
guidance of an Ayurveda practitioner. |
|
Many
may wonder how relevant are these good old pieces
of advice today .Young mothers may even plead for
the food of their liking within a few days of delivery
quite ignorant of their systems helplessness. |
|
We
should remember that this ‘veda of living’
helped our grannies, who gave birth to at least half-a-dozen
children, worked hard for livelihood without prolapsed
uterus, nagging back pain or bleeding and never heard
of hysterectomy and incisional hernia. |
Though
lifestyle has changed a lot, these concepts are
still practical with healthy alteration on the advice
of a qualified ayurvedic physician.
